In addition to natural ageing, an artwork can be affected by the changes within the materials which can affect its structure and appearance and lead to damage.

This often happens as a result of overexposure to uncontrolled levels of high humidity or heat, or through the impact of a physical incident.

The ability to accurately determine the state of an artwork, to take actions at the right time and in an appropriate way against any damage found, can mean the difference between saving it for future generations or losing it forever.
